Welcome to Year 3
Year 3 is a chance to apply the skills learned at Key Stage 1 and refine and extend those skills across the curriculum. We seek to encourage children to become independent and responsible for their own learning. This will prepare them in the best way possible for the next four years of their primary education.
We greatly appreciate the role in supporting your child through homework. Your child will be expected to read regularly at home, independently and under adult supervision. We encourage children to enjoy their reading, to explore characterization and discuss the storylines. The follow up discussion of what has been read is of great value in developing comprehension skills. A reading diary is a valuable communication tool between parents and teachers.
Y3 children will be taught spellings through a new systematic Read Write Inc. Spelling programme. This will teach new words correctly and consolidate spelling knowledge. This will include exception words and homophones and the application of general spelling rules. The children will bring home words they have been learning in a Spelling Log Book and are encouraged to share these with you.
Maths homework is set regularly and is related to the work completed in class. Literacy homework forms an integral part of the Literacy and Language Programme and is a short task to be completed the same night it is set as it will be followed up in the next lesson.
Please have a look through the Y3 planning grids to see where topics are being taught. Termly class information letters will let you know what else in going on. Other newsletters are regularly sent home by text and email.
There are two Parents Evenings’ planned during the year but if there is a concern regarding your child’s education or welfare please do speak to me about it. Very often ‘a nip in the bud’ can prevent problems before they become big issues.
Working together as a team, we will endeavour to give your child the best support possible for their Year 3 education.
