Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

I am looking forward to getting to know you and working together so that we have a very exciting and productive year. I hope that your child enjoys the new challenges and approaches to learning that Year 2 has to offer.

Learning in Year 2

The Year 2 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Year 1. The children will have a more formal learning environment in Year 2 but they will continue to learn through exciting topics so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.  The Year 2 Termly Planning Grids and Termly Information Letters are available here on the website. These will give you an outline of the teaching and learning experiences your child will discover each term.

How can parents support learning?

Year 2 is an important year for learning; it is the year when children should become competent and confident in all areas, but particularly in reading, writing and maths.  To ensure that the children become the best that they can be, it is important that support in all three areas is being provided at home as well as at school.  This may include: listening to your child read at home, helping them with any homework, sharing and practising weekly spellings  or chanting the times tables.

Daily Reading – Your child will be given a book and a reading diary to bring home each night. Please comment in the reading diary each time you hear your child read. Your child will read every day in school to assess their progress. Reading is essential to progress so please try and hear your child read as often as possible.

Friday Homework – Homework is an important part of the children’s learning. Each week your child will be given a Maths and English task related to activities the children have been learning during the week. This is to be returned the following Thursday.

Spellings – The children will be taught spellings through a new systematic spelling programme – Read Write Inc. Spelling. This will enable them to spell new words correctly and give them plenty of practice in spelling them… including exception words and homophones. The children will  bring home the spellings they have been learning in a spelling log book and they will be encouraged to share these at home with you.

If you have any questions or queries about your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to come and see me.

General Reminders…

  • The children will be doing PE on Wednesdays. Please ensure your child has their correct PE kit in school and that all items are clearly labelled.
  • Library day is on Thursday. Please ensure that library books are returned each week.
  • Any letters or reply slips, which need to be returned, can be handed into the office or given to the class teacher.
  • The children can access their own water throughout the day and will bring it home each night.

I look forward to a happy and exciting year filled with learning!

Thank you
Mrs Angela Cross
